Fletcher Benton was born in 1931 in Jackson, Ohio. He began studying art at a very young age and developed a great interest in sign painting. In 1945, at age 14, he opened his own sign shop with a friend and held his first exhibition. He enrolled as a premed student at the University of Miami in Oxford. Ohio, but soon switched to art. He dropped out his junior year, but returned to receive his B.F.A. in 1956. Fletcher Benton's work has explored and ranged over several areas. Benton considered himself a painter and his first works were exactly that. He then moved on to kinetic art. In 1974 he abandoned that field and moved into large piece sculpture in bronze. By 1978, he moved into working with welded steel. In 1979, he was given an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters for his outstanding contribution to sculpture. Most of his sculptures are series.

As with much of Fletcher Benton's work, "Wedge Arc", one of the Balanced/Unbalanced series, deals with the precariousness of geometric elements placed in an attitude of tension somewhere between balance and imbalance. Fletcher Benton comments, "This potential towards imbalance implies the sense of the fourth dimension of time in relation to space."
