New Art Exhibit at American Jewish University

American Jewish University announced today that the “REMEMBRANCE/YOM HASHOAH” art exhibition, featuring the work of Bill Aron, Carol Inez Charney, Ruth Snyder, and Mitzi Trachtenberg, will open on April 19, 2009 at American Jewish University’s Platt and Borstein Galleries. The exhibit will be on view through July 12, 2009, and the public is invited to meet the artists at a free opening reception on Sunday, April 19, between 3:00 and 5:00 pm.

Bill Aron and Carol Inez Charney’s photographs, Ruth Snyder’s sculpture, and Mitzi Trachtenberg’s collages reflect upon the darkest period of recent human history.

Carol Inez Charney’s series of photographs, Marked for Life, uses the context of the cinema to present real people who have experienced the incomprehensible and survived. Mitzi Trachtenberg injects reality by incorporating fragments of documents, personal letters, photos, and genealogy charts in her collage compositions in the Lifeline Series. Ruth Snyder presents universal themes in bronze sculpture. Her work, Ghetto Wall, represents man’s intrinsic yearning to survive in the face of overwhelming odds.

The intent of Bill Aron’s photographic project was to go beyond the Holocaust and show survivors in the fullness of their lives; to show that not only did they survive, but they established families, prospered, and gave back to their communities.

Speaker Hannelore Hillman, survivor and author, will share her unique personal story at the opening on Sunday, April 19, from 3 to 5 pm. The public is invited free of charge to this special event and reception for the artists in the Platt and Borstein Galleries at American Jewish University located at 15600 Mulholland Drive, just off the 405 freeway in the Sepulveda Pass cultural corridor.

Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday 10 am to 4 pm, Friday 10am to 2 pm. Parking is free. For more information about this exhibit, or to schedule a guided tour, please call (310) 476-9777 ext. 201.
